Edinburgh: National Museum of Scotland
First and most important note: There’s an easily accessible baby changer toilet on the ground floor of the National Museum of Scotland, right off Chambers Street. I stopped in to use the changer a couple of times before actually visiting the museum. The toilet isĀ big, it’s clean, it’s public, and it’s free! In fact, the whole museum is free.
The National Museum of ScotlandĀ is a really fantastic place to take your toddler. On the first floor, there’s a colorful, lively children’s gallery for young children called Imagine. Miles spent a good hour in here, ambling between building block stations, crashing through the reading nook, banging on musical instruments, cranking wheels to make a dragon dance, and monopolizing a shape sorting game.
On the fifth floor, the Adventure Planet gallery is geared for slightly older children, but there was still plenty for Miles to do, touch and see, including wandering through a wonderful tree over and over.
Miles also loved the Natural World galleries which are layered a top each other, with an impressive hanging display called the Wildlife Panorama in the middle. There are plenty of interactive stations in many of the galleries of the museum too. Especially notable for our new walker and budding climber were the many winding staircases around the Grand Gallery. He also loved watching the glass elevators go up and down. And down and up. And up and down.
