I Forgot to Pack Toys!

What do you do if you forgot to pack toys for your baby or toddler? Or they are SO OVER what you packed? Here are the Small Miles top picks for the non-toy travel toys that you can find in your bag or on the plane:

  • A wallet with cards in it
    • If you give away your actual wallet, keep an eye on your child lest it takes you an hour to find your debit card after your child has hidden it in your husband’s shoe. Not that this happened to me.
  • A make-up bag with band-aids, pill bottles, brushes, and make-up inside (with supervision)
    • By 14 months, Miles got really good at taking the lids off of things, and he ended up with liquid eyeliner in his hair when I wasn’t looking. With supervision, taking the cap off an eyebrow brush, for example, is great fine motor skills practice.
  • Exciting beaded necklaces (with supervision)
    • Choking hazard, but great as noise makers and for dress up.
  • Your hats and scarves
    • Look tired, I mean fancy, like your parents.
  • A plastic airline cup with ice
    • Chew on the rim and chase the ice around the tray.
  • Tape or post-it notes
    • Baby can stick, unstick, attempt to eat, write indecipherable notes.

Here are some non-toy toys that you’ll find at your hotel or AirBnB:

  • Pots, pans, and cooking utensils at your vacation rental
    • Break up the serenity of your ocean view with some loud toddler clanging.
  • The push-button phone in your hotel room
    • Give it a wipe, unplug it, and let your child marvel in the outdated technology.
  • Remotes
    • Take the batteries out and give it a good wipe first.
  • Clock radio
    • Knobs, lights, and sounds.
  • Key cards for hotel rooms
    • Make sure you hold on to at least one before the other becomes a toy.
  • Random tickets, brochures, and pamphlets
    • Rip, sort, throw, hide.
  • A Kleenex box
    • A full one is fun to empty. An empty one is fun to hide toys in.
  • Your suitcase
    • It’s a car, it’s a place to practice climbing into and out of, it has wheels. Ding, ding, ding.
  • The ice bucket
    • Makes a great tub toy.
